Elmo Birthday

Unfortunately, during the move, I did some pretty cute cakes but didn't get 'real' pictures of them.  I like to photograph my orders at the very end with my nice camera and not my phone.  The quality doesn't compare.

This Elmo cake for Addison is an example of what I'm talking about here.  I didn't get to capture a finished photo of the cake but I did get a quick snapshot of the cake almost finished.


Addison loves Elmo (just like my son!) and her mom found a really cute Elmo cake on Pinterest.  She also had a really cute top made for Addison to wear at her birthday.  I love how bright and colorful the cake was for a second birthday.  I tried to copy the cake as best as possible but I'll tell ya, cutting out Elmo by hand with an X-acto knife isn't easy and is hard to replicate.

I think it's the eyes that aren't quite right.  They're a little too far apart.

Did you know it's been proven (somehow, someway by someone that finds this stuff intriguing) that you are more "beautiful" if your eyes are closer together than farther apart?  I guess this goes for Elmo & Friends too.

Oh well.  The cake turned out cute and I'm sure Addison loved her Elmo cake with her name on it.

Snips, Snails, & Puppy Dog Tails Birthday!

 Benjamin, a sweet little friend of ours recently turned one!  His mom picked out the theme, "Snips, Snails, & Puppy Dog Tails" for his first birthday party.  She had this adorable invitation handmade for the event.

I blurred out sweet Benjamin in respect of privacy for my customers.  He really is a doll though. :)

Lilly's 2nd Birthday

The sister of this birthday girl was turning 2 and having a cupcake themed birthday party!  Her mom had already found her adorable outfit and needed a cake to match.

Her mom wanted a cupcake cake with some cookies to go with.

I loved how it all turned out and how the cake matched Lilly's outfit.  

However, this order had a minor setback.  :(  I got a call about 30 minutes after it was picked up that the top of the cupcake on the cake had fallen off!!!!  I was mortified.  Truly so sad for Lilly, Lilly's mom, and the cute cake.  

Unfortunately, I couldn't remake the whole thing again because I didn't have the time.  I was able to make a small smash-size cake in the same design along with some cupcakes.

That was definitely a first (and hopefully last!) and I'm so sorry that happened to Lilly's cake.  I think she still had a pretty good birthday though (and she probably won't remember!) :)

Rainbow Birthday

Sweet Ella loves rainbows.  And I love her rainbow cake!

Ella's mom actually found this cake idea in a magazine, took a picture of it, and then sent me the idea.  See below. :)

She didn't want it tiered though, so I just made a large enough cake to feed the guests.  She also wanted some clouds around the bottom and "Happy Birthday" written in white icing.  Check it out!

She also ordered some cookies to go as favors.  She found this ideas on Pinterest.  Cute huh?

To Infinity And Beyond!!!

I had the joy of making a Buzz Lightyear cake for a sweet little boy turning two.  He LOVES Buzz and the family was having a small celebration so this is the cake I made for them.

That Buzz is a toy I found at Target.  He's pretty cool.  Press his red button and he lights up.  I bet the birthday boy will love this cake even more when he realizes he has a new Buzz to play with!

Train Cookies & Cupcakes

Remember my little giveaway?  If not, here is the post.  The winner was my college friend, Jena.   She wanted to cash in on her FREE cookies for her son's 2nd birthday.  Apparently he LOVES trains.  I think most boys do at that age.  My little guy is only one but I have a feeling trains will be my life soon. :)

Anyway, I asked if she wanted Thomas the Train, but she mentioned just a general train will do.  She also wanted some cupcakes to go along with the cookies.  So here they are!

Here are the tops of the cupcakes.  I already boxed them up before I realized I didn't take any photos.  Oops.  I used a variety of cupcake wrappers to add something else to the cupcakes.

Lego Cake

This cake took me back to my childhood.  

My brother and I used to spend HOURS building and playing with the hundreds of lego pieces we somehow convinced our parents to buy us.  I'm pretty sure we had every set imaginable.  (By the way, lego sets these days are not what they used to be like.  They're so much more high tech and complicated!)

Anyway, I got an order for a lego cake for two brothers.  I knew I had to bring my A-game when creating the pieces.  Those boys would definitely know if I messed up a piece.  :)

So, I experimented a little with modeling chocolate to see if that would work easier than fondant for the lego pieces.  The yellow, green, blue, and red pieces are all made out of modeling chocolate.  The white, black, grey, and orange are fondant.  You can't really tell a difference between the two, but fondant or modeling chocolate, it doesn't matter; making lego pieces takes FOREVER. 

This cake comes in second for hardest and most time-consuming cake.  I'll share a post about the cake that took place #1 in that category later. 

But you know what?  All that work paid off; the boys LOVED their Lego cake.  The older brother didn't want anyone to eat his Lego pieces.  How cute is that?!  And although it took me a while, I really enjoyed making all the little pieces and feeling like a kid again building this Lego cake.

Happy Birthday Kristen!

Today is my beautiful sister's birthday!

I love to celebrate with her on this day.  And although I am not able to be with her in person this year, I sent her a box of goodies to let her know that she is loved and cherished!

We both share a love for butter cookies and have some wonderful memories baking and decorating them together.  So it was only natural to send her some!

She is having a get-together this evening with some friends and I wanted to contribute a little something. :)

I love how colorful and happy they turned out. :)

I also made her a little something for her house to help her enjoy her favorite time of the year.  

These pumpkins are not real.  Michael's craft store sells plain, undecorated pumpkins in black, white/cream, and orange that you can decorate yourself.  They come in three different sizes too.  I love a blank canvas, so I had too much fun hand-painting and decorating these for her.  I hope she'll be able to use these for years to come!

Swan Lake Birthday

Somehow I have been doing this sweet little girl's birthday cakes for THREE years now! 

This year, she was having a Swan Lake Ballet birthday party.  Her mom found some adorable ideas online and shared them with me.  I recreated everything she asked for, which included these ballet slipper cookies:

I cut out the shape of the ballet shoe using a template I made from cardboard.  Then I iced the slipper part and let that dry.  After that, I made pink strips of fondant for the laces.  And finally, I tied a pink ribbon in the hole I punched out prior to baking.

She also ordered tutu cupcakes.  I didn't get a great picture of them all together, but I got one.  She ordered these wrappers ahead of time and just had them shipped to me.  Unfortunately the wrappers were a little too tall and concealed the dress part of the tutu, but they were still gorgeous around the cupcake.

This was the cake she picked out.  In the original example that she found online, the ballet shoes were made out of sugar; but to save her some $, I found this ballet slipper ornament at a local craft store in the christmas section.  It worked!  

The square bottom part of the cake is also not real cake.  Like Julia's first birthday cake I just did, the cake her mom wanted was going to feed more than she needed so I just made part of it fake.  You can't even tell!

Birthday Cookies

This order was actually from a donation I made to a church bible study group for a FREE one-dozen cookie order.  The lucky winner was a sweet girl in this bible study that I'm in and she wanted to take advantage right away!  She said she had several September birthdays in the family and just said to make them girlie.

I decided to go with pink and orange because I'm loving that color combo right now.  I also love cookies that look like cupcakes.  I think they're fun.  :)  I made some very tiny pink fondant flowers to go on the orange scalloped cookies to add a little flare.  I will say though, that I'm a bit disappointed in the bleeding that occurred on the orange cookies.  The humidity down here gets me sometimes and it got me this time.  When I piped the letters it looked perfectly fine, but after about ten minutes, it started to swell and bleed. :(  It was a bummer but they still turned out pretty cute.

I want to post about this cake I did last month for a new customer.  She was turning 40 and needed something fabulous for the special occasion!  She sent over the invitation along with a few preferences and we came up with some ideas together.

She wanted mainly black and pink, so here's the finished product:

I love the polka dots and the bow on top!  I think it just makes the cake super girlie and fun.

Pink, Sparkly, Glittery Cupcakes

I have become extremely busy overnight with orders!  I'm so grateful to all the people who keep spreading my name.  Word-of-mouth advertising is the best and it's working!!

One of the most recent orders was through a friend of a friend of a friend (see word-of-mouth IS working!) and she wanted pink, sparkly, glittery cupcakes for her daughter's first birthday.  If that wasn't girly enough, she also mentioned her daughter wore pearls in her first birthday photo shoot.  So, the order was really for pink, sparkly, glittery, and pearly cupcakes. :)  How fun is that?!?

I knew this would be a very fun order.

Lovely Butterflies

Our sweet little neighbor, Elisabeth, celebrated her 2nd birthday last week and she wanted butterfly cookies!  Her mom found some awesome cookies on the web and I tried to recreate.  This was a first for me, and a bit of a challenge, but I loved how they turned out!  My favorite design is the dark navy-purplish blue with black and orange.

Baron Turns ONE!

I recently had the privilege of working on a special little project for a special little boy up in New York. I met his mom, Teresa, through my sister while out in California.

She ordered some cute monkey cupcake toppers for her son's first birthday.  I have never shipped anything fondant so I didn't really know how it would turn out.  Luckily, everything arrived in one piece and Baron had a great first birthday!

Olivia Turns Four!

Our neighbor's daughter, Olivia, turned four this past weekend.  She's in love with Strawberry Shortcake (what little girl isn't???) and so she needed some treats to celebrate!
